What is grammar?

What is grammar?
“Grammar is a set of rules that enable us to study and comprehend any language”.
It is, in fact, the study and usage of words in sentences. Grammar is a set of rules that construe the grammatical structures of any language.

Grammar is, in fact, the study and usage of words in sentences. It is a set of rules that define the grammatical structures of any language.
The origin of word grammar is from Greek “grammatike” art (of letters) to Old French “gramaire” until late Middle English “grammar”.

Structure and form of words
Morphology
Adjustment of words in sentences
Syntax
Sounds of language
Phonology
Meanings of language
Semantics
Language function and its use in the context
Pragmatics

Grammar deals with the structure and forms of words “morphology” with their adjustment in sentences and phrases “syntax” with language sound “phonology” with meanings “semantics” and with the function of language and its contextual use “pragmatics”.

An individual starts learning grammar from the very first day of his birth. When an individual opens his eyes in this world, he starts listening to people all around him in a particular language using it’s already designed rules. Though a baby doesn’t comprehend its meaning at that time, he starts learning it.
It is not a requirement to study grammar to learn a language. A lot many people in the world speak their native languages without learning their grammar.  But if you want to learn a foreign language, you need to master its grammar to learn that particular language adroitly. So, look upon grammar as a friend, something affirmative and good that can be your guide on the way.

Why is learning grammar essential?

If you intend to be a proficient speaker or writer, you need to have a sound knowledge of grammar to be clear in your speaking and writing. There must be coherence in what you speak and write so that a clear and concise message is forwarded. If you use incorrect grammar, you will be unable to convey a flawless message.
Sound knowledge of grammar will be conducive in interpreting a text. At the same time, it will be helpful in composition. The ability to communicate efficiently is extremely significant in everyday life. A precise knowledge of grammar makes you stand out among your friends, colleagues and acquaintances.
